LEWIS R. PAINE SHIP
Painted by S.F.M. BADGER, circa 1898
This marine painting by S.F.M. Badger was stored in an attic for many years. Over time, the canvas became extremely dry and brittle and, ultimately suffered a severe tear.
By painstakingly realigning each thread along the tear the image was put back together again. Next, the canvas was fully stabilized by lining it to a new support. As with all materials used, the lining adhesive is fully reversible as to never permanently alter the work of art.
The painting was then carefully cleaned and varnished.
Due to the skill and care executed during re-consolidation, 95% of the tear virtually disappeared after lining it to a new support. Therefore, there is minimal inpainting and the picture you now see is nearly 100% original with practically no retouch or alteration of any kind other than a new canvas support on the back.
