This stately portrait, attributed to Gilbert Stuart, had multiple problems caused by an improper restoration done in the past. The visible “bloom” in the varnish layer was caused by materials unsuitable for restoration. When the owners of this portrait relocated to a more humid climate, the painting began to deteriorate rapidly. This portrait vividly illustrates the importance of choosing a skillful and properly trained conservator who strictly adheres to the American Institute for Conservation Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
To properly restore this portrait, great time and care was employed to reverse and remove the poorly done restoration of the past. In the end, the painting was returned to its original, magnificent condition using only the highest quality, state-of-the-art methods and materials available today.
